R.C.I.A.

Preparation for R.C.I.A.

Any adult who is considering becoming a Catholic, or who has been baptized Catholic, but never received Communion and Confirmation, can become initiated in the Catholic Church.  Anyone interested, is invited to, “COME and SEE” the faith life, learn about the Church and discern the movement of the Spirit in their lives.

The way to becoming a Catholic Christian follows a process of journeying through 4 periods .  Each period is a span of time devoted to formation in doctrine, liturgy, believing, serving and living the Catholic way of life.

First Period:  Pre-Catechumenate
This initial period intends to awaken the faith of persons through a dialogue between their lives and the message of Christianity.  It is a time for genuine questioning about how life in Christ can be and how the Church provides that meaning.  If the inquirer discovers the beginning of a faith experience, he or she then requests entrance into the Church.

Second Period:  The Cathechumenate
During this period a candidate’s understanding and appreciation of the faith is deepened through catechesis, (teaching), and the help of sponsors and members of the parish.  This is the time for experiencing the total life of the Parish community.  The Catechumenate varies in length until one elscts to receive the Sacrements of Initiation.

Third Period:  Purification and Elightenment
The third period normally corresponds with the liturgical season of Lent and offers an opportunity for more intense preparation for the Sacrements of Initiation.  The entire parish community renews its commitment to the Christion life by joining with the elect, (previously candidates), in reflecting on Scripture, as well as joining in prayer, fasting and works of charity.

Fourth Period:  Mystagogia

This period begins after Easter and the reception of the Sacrements of Initiation.  The catechesis covers the mysteries of Christ’s death and resurrection, that were celerbrated during the Easter Vigil.  They are the basis for the ongoing formation of all Christians, particulary the newly initiated, (Neophytes).  This festive season provides the opportunity for the Church to reflect upon the mission entrusted to it.  This final period is a reminder that the Neophyte is not at the end of becoming a Catholic Christian, but merely at the beginning.
